i’m waiting for my first shipment of ampyra, which the pharmacy tells me should be here tomorrow. according to the manufacturer, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks before you know if it is working for you. that’s kind of a drag – having to wait maybe several weeks, looking for the probably subtle signs that it is working (increased walking speed), and if those signs are not apparent, wondering if i’m just not noticing them, or if it really is not working. in any case, i am looking forward to only having to take one pill every 12 hours, as opposed to the compounded version i’m taking now every 4 hours.
i was at my physical therapist’s the other day, and we were talking about the various modes of walking support i use – a single cane, a single elbow-cuff-crutch, and the walker. the pt was surprised that i only use a single elbow crutch, surprised that my neuro only wrote a prescription for one. the pt pulled two of them out of their closet so i could give them a try. after fumbling with the coordination (left crutch with right foot, right crutch with left foot, which is sort of like rubbing your belly and patting your head) but t felt like once i mastered that, it would be second only to the walker in ease of use, and with the least possibility of falling down. so i am waiting to get a prescription for another crutch from my neuro, picking up a second one, and practicing the coordination. i am hopeful that i’ll get good enough at it, that i can go out-and-about to places that are not wheelchair-friendly, and use the crutches. who’d’a thunk i’d ever be excited about being able to get around on crutches?
